COMPANY’S HISTORY

Habersham & Cowan, Inc. was formed by Joel H. Cowan in 1986 to serve as the General Partner for a family limited partnership. This company holds title to various shareholdings and real estate. It also conducts advisory services through associates of Mr. Cowan. His past activities include: Real estate development starting in the 1960’s including the new town of Peachtree City, Georgia, a large urban upscale shopping center Phipps Plaza which includes Sak’s Fifth Avenue and Tiffany’s. He also developed a large coastal resort including a major hotel, all types of housing and condominiums, a marina and two golf courses. He advised and was on the board of a private real estate development company for 30 years which included a new town, multifamily housing and commercial development. He was an officer, director and founder of a large REIT that was public and listed on the American Stock Exchange. That company made a major acquisition of another public company and he was the lead in this. Bought a small bank in 1968, which grew rapidly and was sold to a major bank. He was part of the team to bring Continental Airlines out of bankruptcy and served as a director. It became one of the most successful airlines in the industry at that time. Joined the board of World Airways and acquired a block of stock. It was brought out of extreme financial difficulty by downsizing and repurposing. After stabilizing, it was sold to a private equity firm at the top of the market. He was an early mover into China building condominiums in a midsized city south of Beijing. He started other businesses and advised on other projects. He is a director of EastWest Institute in New York. In that capacity he has participated in eight high level meetings with a group of Chinese think tanks, party officials and military. Have advised and/or participated in several startups in various fields. Mr. Cowan is a Professor of the Practice in the MBA program at Georgia Tech, a top 20 rated program in the US, serving for 9 years.
